Convert PNG to WebP for faster websites
WebP supports transparency just like PNG but compresses far better, so logos, icons, illustrations and screenshots load much faster on your website. Google reports lossless WebP files are about 26% smaller than PNGs, and lossy WebP at high quality is usually smaller still.
Transparent backgrounds are fully preserved, and the quality slider lets you choose between near-lossless output and maximum savings. WebP is supported by all current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, and by WordPress since version 5.8.
Converted in your browser, never uploaded
Every conversion runs inside your browser. Images are read from your device into memory (RAM), decoded, redrawn on an HTML5 canvas and saved straight to your downloads, so personal photos never touch a server, are never stored and cannot be seen by anyone else. There is no upload wait, no file-count limit and no watermark. Converted files keep their full resolution; camera metadata such as GPS location is not copied into the new file.
Frequently asked questions
Does WebP keep the transparent background of my PNG?
Yes. WebP fully supports transparency, so logos and icons keep their transparent edges exactly as in the PNG.
Will WebP make my website faster?
Smaller images download faster, which improves loading time and Largest Contentful Paint, one of Google's Core Web Vitals. Pages with many PNG graphics usually benefit the most.
Why is the WebP option unavailable in my browser?
A few browsers can display WebP but cannot create it from a canvas. If the option is disabled, use a current version of Chrome, Edge or Firefox to convert.
