Format and beautify JSON online
Minified JSON from an API or a log file is almost impossible to read. The JSON beautifier adds consistent indentation and line breaks so the structure is clear at a glance: objects, arrays and nesting levels line up, and syntax highlighting gives keys, strings, numbers, booleans and null values their own colors.
Choose 2 spaces, 4 spaces or tabs to match your project style, sort keys alphabetically to make two documents easy to compare, and switch to the tree view to collapse large sections or copy the exact path of any value, such as $.users[0].email.
Beautify JSON in 3 steps
- 1Paste your JSON, drop a .json file onto the editor, or click Open file.
- 2Pick the indentation (2 spaces, 4 spaces or tabs) and optionally sort keys.
- 3Copy the formatted result, download it as a .json file, or explore it in the tree view.
Safe for API keys, tokens and customer data
API responses, config files and database exports often contain access tokens, emails and personal data, and many online formatters send whatever you paste to their servers. This tool runs entirely in your browser: parsing, validation, highlighting and CSV conversion all happen in local memory, and nothing is uploaded or logged. It also handles large files, up to 20 MB, without server-side limits.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between beautify and pretty print?
They mean the same thing: reformatting JSON with indentation and line breaks so people can read it. The data itself does not change.
Should I use 2 or 4 spaces?
2 spaces is the most common choice in JavaScript and web projects and keeps deep nesting compact; 4 spaces is common in Python and Java codebases. Tabs let each developer choose their own width. Use whatever your project already uses.
Does formatting change my data?
No. Keys, values and their order stay exactly the same unless you turn on Sort keys. The one exception is integers larger than about 9 quadrillion (2^53), which JavaScript cannot store exactly; the tool warns you when it finds them.
Can it format invalid JSON?
Not until the error is fixed, because the structure cannot be known for certain. The validator shows the exact line and column of the problem so you can fix it in seconds.
