Compress JPG images and reduce JPEG file size

JPG (also written JPEG) is the most widely supported photo format on the web, in email and in apps, which makes it the safest choice when you are not sure what a website accepts. This page is preset to JPG output: every image you add, including PNG and WebP files, is saved as a compressed JPG at the quality you choose.

JPEG compression works by simplifying fine detail and color variations the human eye barely notices. Lowering the quality from 100% to around 80% usually cuts the file size dramatically while the photo looks the same on screen, which is ideal for upload forms, email and websites that reject large files.

Tips for the smallest JPG files

  • Resize large camera photos (4000 px and wider) to 1600–2000 px for the web; this saves more than any quality setting.
  • Use 70–80% quality for websites and 60–70% for email or messaging.
  • Need to stay under an upload limit? Set Max file size and the tool adjusts each photo until it fits.
  • JPG has no transparency, so use PNG or WebP for logos with transparent backgrounds.

Why this image compressor is private

Most online compressors upload your photos to a server, process them there and send them back. This one never uploads them. The compression engine runs inside your browser using background Web Workers: your images are read from your device into memory (RAM), compressed by your own processor and saved straight to your downloads folder. Nothing is stored, and closing the tab clears everything. It also means no upload wait, no daily quota and no server file-size cap.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between JPG and JPEG?

There is none. They are the same format; the shorter .jpg extension dates from older versions of Windows that only allowed three-letter file extensions. Both work everywhere.

What quality should I use for JPG?

80% is a reliable default for websites and online stores. Use 70% for email and messaging, and 90% or more if you plan to print or edit the photo later.

Can I reduce a JPG to under 1 MB or 200 KB?

Yes. Choose the limit under Max file size. The tool lowers the quality step by step, and reduces the dimensions only if that is still not enough, until each file fits.

Why does my compressed JPG lose its transparent background?

JPG does not support transparency. For logos and graphics with transparent backgrounds, use the Compress PNG or Convert to WebP page instead; both formats keep transparency.
